Research and Development Projects on Video Codec Comparison and Analysis

MSU Graphics & Media Lab (Video Group)

Computer Graphics and Multimedia Laboratory of Moscow State University during many years is working in the area of video codec comparison and analysis using objective quality metrics. Eleven reports of modern video codec comparisons are publicly available, including four H.264 codec comparison, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 comparison, MPEG-2 decoders error recovery test and many others. We have developed a number of methods and algorithms for codec comparison and analysis including separate codec’s features analysis and codec’s options analysis.

Comparison and Analysis Research Directions

Comparison is based on objective (automatic) quality metrics and allows us to:

  • Use a representative test set (big number of video sequences, gigabytes of date processing)
  • Utilize new types of visualization

Typical size of measured data during one comparison is more than ten GBytes. Currently we are the only organization which carries out public massive comparisons of modern video codecs in different areas.

Possible future research activities:

  • New types of visualization. Allows better comparison results understanding
  • Comparison automation improvement
  • Usage of bitstream information (for H.264 codecs). Allows deeper codec analysis

Analysis of video codec algorithms

Our main idea is to use natural sequences modifications and synthetic sequences generation for detailed analysis of codecs. Implemented methods of this analysis allow us to:

  • Test and compare different parts of codecs (such as ME, RC on GOP, mode decision, etc.).
  • Provide detailed comparison of overall codecs performance which includes information about performance of main codec parts (without additional information).

Possible future research activities:

  • New types of sequences and analyzers. Better analysis of specific codec parts.
  • Usage of improved objective quality metrics to increase correlation with human subjective opinions.

Analysis of video codec options

Main use cases of these methods are the following:

  • Find optimal presets for different speed/quality tradeoff values for a particular sequence
  • Perform analysis of option efficiency relative to other codec options
  • Perform comparative analysis of option efficiency using a reference codec

Possible future research activities:

  • Analysis of options stability for different settings. Can be used to improve codec option set by introducing new video dependent options or creating internal dependence on video parameters.
  • Improve performance of analysis using partial search (faster analysis for big sets of options).

Public MSU video filters
Here are available VirtualDub and AviSynth filters. For a given type of digital video filtration we typically develop a family of different algorithms and implementations. Generally there are also versions optimized for PC and hardware implementations (ASIC/FPGA/DSP). These optimized versions can be licensed to companies. Please contact us for details via video(at)graphics.cs.msu_ru.
MSU/YUVsoft filters for companies
We are working with Intel, Samsung, RealNetworks and other companies on adapting our filters other video processing algorithms for specific video streams, applications and hardware like TV-sets, graphics cards, etc. Some of such projects are non-exclusive. Also we have internal researches. Please let us know via video(at)graphics.cs.msu_ru if you are interested in acquiring a license for such filters or making a custom R&D project on video processing, compression, computer vision.
